Today is national maple syrup day! And living in Wisconsin I am amongst the best maple syrup producers in the world. Lucky me! Maple syrup just happens to be one of my favorite natural sweeteners. In fact, it is one of the few sweeteners I use that doesn’t give me that addiction like high that I get from white sugar. I also don’t get that same processed sugar crash from it. I love that maple syrup has a rich flavor and aroma. I sometimes taste vanilla and woody flavors along with molasses and notes of cinnamon. It is very complex. I am impressed that this sweet treat comes right from a tree. I don’t know how many times I have seen this done but I am still amazed by the process of tapping trees.
I use maple syrup in my oatmeal, in my raw food desserts, in baked treats, on ice cream and in my delicious maple banana smoothies.
Banana Maple Smoothie
1 1/2 frozen bananas, cut into pieces (or 1 1/2 cup room temperature bananas and 1 cup ice)
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1 cup plain greek yogurt
Blend all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth. Makes 1 large smoothie or two medium smoothies.
